《分道扬镳》（Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off）是1937年George Geshwin和Ira Geshwin两兄弟为音乐喜剧《一舞倾情》创作的爵士歌曲。歌曲本身所表现的是一对本来情投意合的男女招架不住平淡生活的拉练，开始为分手寻找各种堂而皇之的理由。然而真要分手时，才发现即使面目可憎的伴侣仍牵扯了自己割不断的情意。

但真正让这首爵士歌曲成名并传唱大半个世纪的原因倒不是家长里短的婚恋主题，它的与众不同之处在于世界上恐怕没有多少歌会拿英语发音做文章。

在这首歌里出现了很多重复的词，比如either、neither、potato、tomato等。这其中的秘密在于，这些词在英文中有多个发音，不同的发音虽然意思完全一样，却代表着不同的地域口音，甚至是其地位、阶层、身份的重要标志。

而若要把歌曲从英文翻译成中文，着实体会到可意会不可言传之尴尬。虽然可以用汉语的近义词来取代英文的不同口音，但其中的俏皮、幽默和机智也因此大打折扣。但正是因为歌曲中众多不可译因素，才更生动地反映出一种语言孤独的美丽极有可能成为另一种语言尴尬的障碍。英译中如此，中译英亦如此。我不知道英语需要多少词才能反映出“落英缤纷”的美，又要费多少笔墨才能说清“八月十五蒸年糕—趁早（枣）”为何意。

语言都是美丽的，也都是复杂的。而正是那极复杂、极不可译的部分，才是突显其个性和独特美丽的重要标志。
